******* Volunteer ******* Southeastern Senegal Participate in a partnership initiated by medical students, the local community, the government, and the non-profit sector in Southeastern Senegal. Opportunities for medical, public health, and sustainable development students are being offered to work starting in May of 2008. In place since the spring of 2006, this partnership has brought together numerous groups in an effort to improve health care and access to health care in Southeastern Senegal. Work has focused on building the capacities of local networks of community health workers, reinforcing the technical abilities of the government health facilities, and research design and participation in collaboration with the Senegalese ministry of health by connecting the government health structures and local community with locally operating NGOs (primarily Le Kinkéliba) and institutions, medical and public health students have been able to initiate a number of interventions that are chosen in consultation with the local community and the district health team. Included among these projects are: 1. Installing solar power at the district health center (which previously only had electricity 6 hours a day), 2. Recording and broadcasting weekly health information programs on the local community radio station, 3. Repair of the district ambulance, 4. Translation of the community health worker health manual, Where There is No Doctor into Malinké. 5. Construction of housing for health workers. 6. Providing four computers to two district health centers. 7. Organizing the district stock of medicine and creating a tracking system to manage supply and demand. 8. Training of health care workers in computer skills. 9. Funding and participation in Expanded Vaccination Program (EVP) outreach (vaccinating children in villages up to 90 kilometers away from the health center). 10. Community Nutrition Program that includes an expanding network of five community vegetable gardens. 11. Writing of research-based interventions; the most recent of which is a plan to introduce rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and Artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACTs) into the network of community health workers 12. And Participation in the following projects: a. testing of Intermittent- Preventative Treatment of children and pregnant women for malaria with sulfadoxine-pyremethamine – a research intervention that is being carried out by the University of Dakar with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. b. Community Health Worker training. c. The distribution of impregnated bed nets. d. community-based acute respiratory infection management, which is funded by UNICEF. Certificate of Medical Education leading to MasterUniversity of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital has on line certification in med education with two HRSA funded FD fellows: 5 courses for a certificate. It can be continued to full masters for another year. The program was launched in 2002 as a joint project of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati College of Education. The 45 credit-hour program is entirely online (including the defence of the master*s project using internet-enabled conferencing) and includes 12 three-credit-hour required core courses emphasizing adult learning, curriculum and instruction, and education measurement and research plus a three-credit-hour individual study, a three-credit-hour practicum, and a three-credit-hour master’s project. The target audience is physicians, fellows, and other healthcare professionals with responsibilities and interest in medical education and educational research who seek careers in medical education. A Certificate of Medical Education is also available with five core courses drawn from the M.Ed. program; credit for all five courses is transferable to the M.Ed. program. We accept applications to both the M.Ed. program and the certificate program at any time, and students can enter the program at the beginning of all four quarters of the academic year.
